Innovative Health Initiative celebrates 200th project

Hitting the 200 project milestone shows the strength of the public-private partnership approach pioneered by the Innovative Medicines Initiative and built on by IHI.

From Alzheimer’s to zoonoses, for over 15 years we’ve been harnessing the power of bold collaborations to transform health. Today, our 200-strong project portfolio covers cancer, heart disease (CVD), infectious diseases including antimicrobial resistance, diabetes, dementia, autoimmume diseases, paediatrics and more. Between them, our projects are delivering exciting results that are making a difference in diverse ways:

  • international networks of hospitals and laboratory sites that are being used for clinical studies of novel antibiotics;
  • a not-for-profit with resources and expertise in the development of treatments for childhood cancers;
  • the identification of different types of diabetes, which could pave the way for more personalised treatments;
  • a methodology capable of assessing the degree of Alzheimer’s disease visible in a person’s brain scan;
  • resources to help ensure research data is ‘FAIR’, i.e. findable, accessible, interoperable, reusable.

Meet project 200!

Project number 200 is UMBRELLA, which aims to revolutionise the care of people who experience a stroke, when blood flow to the brain is blocked by a clot or a burst blood vessel. UMBRELLA will do this by collecting a broad set of data on stroke and stroke management across countries, and harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to implement a comprehensive approach that addresses gaps along the whole stroke care pathway, from diagnosis and emergency treatment, right through to rehabilitation and the prevention of further strokes.

IHI Executive Director Niklas Blomberg said: ‘UMBRELLA perfectly exemplifies what IHI is about. It is tackling a major unmet health need by bringing together a coalition of universities, hospitals, patient groups, and companies from different sectors. With the experience of 200 such projects we can confidently say that working in collaborative public-private partnerships allows them to achieve results that would not be possible for any single organisation or even country to address alone.’

Be a part of the IHI success story

We regularly launch new calls for proposals, giving research teams the chance to be part of ambitious, collaborative projects that are designed to have a tangible impact on research and health care. IHI call 8 is currently open for short proposals, and a brokerage event to facilitate networking and consortium-building for our 2025 calls is scheduled for 11-12 November this year.
